WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MAN?
Posted on: 5/6/08 at 2:01 am
I went to the bank the other day and as I walked up to the front door, I noticed a woman approaching. She was a rather attractive woman in her mid thirties. I did what I am accustomed to doing…I smiled and held the door open for her. She glared at me and snapped, “You don’t need to hold the door open for me just because I am a woman.” I continued to smile at her and replied, “I am not holding the door open for you because you are a woman. I am holding the door open for you because I am a man.” I touched my fingers to the brim of my hat and wished her a good day. She huffed; stuck her nose into the air and walked away.

I remember being a young boy and asking my mother, “When will I be a man?” She looked down at me and smiled, as she continued washing the dishes. “You will be a man,” she replied, “when you act like one.”

I remember walking away from her, thinking that her answer wasn’t a particularly helpful one. But it actually was quite useful, because it got me thinking early in life about what it meant to be a man.

Obviously, being a man involves a lot more than just possessing the proper anatomy. And, contrary to what a lot of teenage boys (and even adult males) might believe, being a man has nothing to do with your sexual prowess. So, what does it mean to be a man?

I have some definite thoughts on this, and I would like to explore this topic over the course of several blog entries in the weeks to come. But I want to know what all of you here at Savvy think about this. What do you think characterizes a “man”? I would like both men and women to respond. We might see some surprising differences in opinion.
